Sunset on the Columbia River

We played kickball today and managed to pop the ball in a record breaking 8 minutes. But then we had cheezy spagetti for dinner which kind of made up for it, but I am on kitchen crew so i have to be up at 5 AM...

...I hate kitchen crew...

Mt. St. Helens

A few days ago we camped at the base of Mt. St. Helens, preparing to climb it in the morning. We left in two groups; slow climbers at 6AM and fast climbers at 7AM. I was in the fast climber group and it took me just under four hours to reach the summit. I was the second student up the mountain. We were above the cloud layer and the view was incredible. We could see mt. Hood and Rainer in the distance and the clouds looked like a blanket of mashed potatos below us. The climb was much harder than i expected but it was worth it! My body is still extremely sore though.

Climbing Mt. St. Helens

This is a day late but we climbed Mt. St. Helens! It was a much longer climb than i expected and near the top we had to take breathing breaks every 30 seconds. Also in the ashfield you would take three steps and then slide two steps backwards. Still, getting to the top was worth it. I dont have pictures on my phone but i have plenty on my camera.

Goodbye Yellowstone

We have now left Yellowstone. Hitchhiking around the park was extremly fun and/or dangerous but we still have a lot of learning to do. The van is continuing to be as annoying as possible by refusing to stay fixed for longer than 20 minutes. We had to completely cancel our trip to Glacier because of it. Instead we are going to spend our time looking at fields of cows and kicking the side of Red van. YAY!

Best day ever

Today was our day off because Red van was broken, so Sarah, Sam and I hitchiked into Yellowstone and did some off-trail hiking. We saw a wolf, forged some rivers, and tried to catch some frogs. At the end of the day we hitchhiked back out with some French nuclear physicists (really). Most fun ive had on this trip so far.

Fossils!

Here are some fossils i found in the Sundance formation. The left three are an extinct squidlike creature while the middle is a smooth polished stone that dinosaurs swallowed to help them crush up food. The right two are fossils of some kind of shellfish. It was amazing, there was so may fossils lying around that i couldnt carry then all!

Mapping Sheep Mountain

Today we spent roughly 14 hours mapping Sheep Mountain; named so because of its native population of wild mountain turkeys. One of the formations there is named "Chugwater", possibly replacin Big Clifty as my favorite rock formation name. The picture above is a paneramic shot from the top of the anticline.
